5 Oral Health Tips for a Healthy Summer Smile
June 22, 2021
Summer is finally here, which means plenty of days to soak up the sun or cool off in the pool. With life slowing down during the season, it’s easy to stray from your daily routines. As you spend more time with family or traveling for vacation, don’t let your plans leave a negative mark on your smile. It’s more important than ever to commit to your teeth and gums. Here are 5 summer oral health tips in Buffalo Grove to follow to keep your mouth healthy.
1. Don’t forget to brush and floss.
The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth for two full minutes in the morning and at night. If you find yourself snacking more often throughout the day, it’s best to brush after every meal. Don’t forget to take the time to floss in between each tooth before going to bed. If you’ll be traveling, pack an oral hygiene kit containing all the necessary supplies to make it easier to maintain your smile while you’re away from home.
2. Don’t skip your cleaning and checkup.
Besides brushing and flossing, you should also see your dentist for a cleaning and checkup at least every 6 months. Although you have many exciting activities planned, don’t skip your routine visit. Your dentist will remove any plaque or tartar buildup that can infect your gum tissue. They’ll also examine your smile to ensure there aren’t any untreated dental issues that can lead to a big problem down the road. You’ll enjoy a healthy, attractive smile to avoid an unplanned trip to your dentist.
3. Limit sugary and starchy treats.
Summer is a great time for tasty treats. Unfortunately, ice cream, cookies, and chips can contribute to the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. It’s best to choose healthy snacks and limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks. You’ll also want to cut back on starches. If you can’t skip your favorite snack, be sure to brush your teeth when you’re finished.
4. Chew more gum.
Sugarless gum is an excellent addition to your day because chewing it increases your saliva production. Your saliva cleanses your teeth and gums in between brushing and flossing. You’ll help rinse food particles and bacteria from your mouth to keep your smile healthy while also freshening your breath.
5. Drink more water.
You know you need to drink plenty of water during warmer weather to stay hydrated, but your smile also depends on it. If your mouth is too dry, harmful bacteria growth will increase, which can raise your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. It’s best to always drink water whenever possible.
Don’t let summer cause permanent consequences for your smile. Commit to your dental health, so you can spend more time at the beach and fewer hours in the dental chair.
