Should I Think About Getting Veneers?
March 13, 2024
If you’ve ever wondered why a certain movie star has a seemingly flawless smile, the reason is likely to be veneers. In fact, these cosmetic dental appliances were first invented to alter an actor’s smile as part of a costume on a Hollywood set. If you’re not quite happy with the appearance of your teeth, veneers may be a great way to permanently cover cosmetic flaws to create a beautiful new smile. Here’s a brief overview of how veneers work and why they might be worth considering.
What Can Veneers Treat?
Veneers are thin shells made out of porcelain or ceramic that are designed to be cemented to teeth, thereby concealing flaws like cracks, chips, and stains. They can also be used to reshape teeth that are small or misshapen. In some cases, they can address minor alignment issues like gaps without orthodontic treatment. Many patients have used veneers to completely transform their smiles into beautiful new states.
Am I a Good Candidate for Veneers?
The process of getting veneers begins with a consultation with your dentist, during which they will thoroughly examine your mouth to assess your oral health and determine if you can be a good candidate for the treatment. If you have any issues like tooth decay or gum disease, it will have to be resolved before the treatment can continue. After having them placed, you will also have to practice excellent oral hygiene to keep them in good shape and prevent infections.
How Are Veneers Placed?
Veneers are typically placed over two appointments. During the first, your dentist will begin by numbing the teeth being treated with a local anesthetic. They will then remove a tiny amount of enamel from these teeth to make room for the veneers. After taking bite impressions, temporary veneers will be cemented to the teeth. You will be sent on your way and the impressions will be sent to the laboratory where your permanent veneers will be manufactured.
You’ll come in for your second appointment when your dentist receives your permanent set. During this visit, your dentist will numb your teeth again, remove the temporary veneers, and cement the permanent ones on the teeth. After making any last-minute adjustments, you’ll be free to enjoy your beautiful new smile.
Don’t let cosmetic flaws in your smile stand in the way of you smiling proudly. Having a consultation with your dentist can help you know if getting veneers is right for you.
