What is a Dental Crown?

When a tooth is badly damaged or decayed, Dr. Nagornaya will use a dental crown or “cap” to repair the injured area and restore the tooth’s aesthetics, health, and function. More invasive than a dental filling, this method of restorative treatment is commonly recommended when:

  • A person requires a root canal
  • An individual needs a dental implant to replace a single missing tooth
  • Severe dental decay is causing harm and weakening the tooth’s overall structure
  • Facial trauma that results in a cracked or broken tooth

The Dental Crown Process

Receiving a dental crown requires multiple appointments. During the first visit, Dr. Nagornaya will go over your case and discuss whether a dental crown is the right treatment option. We’ll also determine if additional preventive treatment is required.

If you are cleared to move forward with a dental crown, we will begin to prep the tooth by removing the decayed or damaged portions before removing some of the enamel. This ensures that the new crown will sit flush against the tooth and not appear bulky or unnatural.

Our team will then take an impression of the tooth so that it can be sent to a local laboratory. There, technicians will start fabricating the crown according to the specifications provided by Dr. Nagornaya.

In between appointments, you’ll be required to wear a temporary crown to not only protect the affected tooth but also get a sneak peek of what life will be like with your new restoration.

After a few weeks, we will have you return to our office to have your temporary removed and your finalized crown cemented into place.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

The benefits that come with getting a dental crown are not what you might expect. While it’s nice to have something that adequately covers and protects a vulnerable tooth, it also:

  • Produces a more beautiful, natural-looking, and confident smile
  • Can last 15+ years if you commit to taking proper care of your crown
  • Offers maximum protection to your vulnerable tooth, minimizes the possibility of future damage or reinfection
  • Makes it easier to chew certain foods again, so you can enjoy a nutritious and healthy diet
